Grainfreeze is a real-time phase vocoder–based time-stretching and freeze processor. It loads an audio file into memory and resynthesizes it using FFT analysis and overlap-add techniques. You can click and drag around the playhead freely as you wish, moving it backwards plays the sound grains backwards as well, and have various controls for the playback speed and sound smoothing. Arguably the most interesting possibility is the spectral freeze mode, here a tiny slice of the audio gets looped using crossfading.

In the download you will find version 1.0 as shown in the video, and version 1.1 with included spectral viewer showing which notes are present in the current grain, with the 10 loudest frequencies highlighted with their note name. Please note that this plugin is very CPU intensive, on my mid-range i5 laptop it uses around 20% CPU.

Grainfreeze is inspired by the Audiostretch App from Bandlab. As there is no real VST or standalone program equivalent for this kind of tonal zero playback speed sound freezing, I made this with the help of Claude Sonnet 4.5 AI and lots of tinkering around. I have not had a great look at the FFT algorithm it implemented, but I bundled the source code written in JUCE/C++ together with the download, so if you’re a pro at this stuff you might be able to improve it further – it is completely open source 🙂

Please note that the focus is on the preservation of tonality, not transients which will get heavily smeared.

Controls and Their Function:

Rate (Modulation Frequency)
Controls the speed at which the modulated delay oscillates (in Hz or BPM)

Phase.
Adjusts the phase shift between the oscillations of the left and right signals (if in stereo).

Depth
Determines the intensity of the modulation, or how much the delay varies from the base time (min).

Min (Minimum Delay)
Sets the minimum delay (in ms) applied to the delayed signal.

Feedback (Regeneration)
Controls how much of the delayed signal is fed back into the input, creating resonance.

Dry/Wet (Original/Processed Signal Balance)
Adjusts the mix between the original (dry) and processed (wet) signals.

How it works: A phaser applies a series of frequency-specific phase shifts to your audio. When mixed back with your original (dry) signal, frequencies that are shifted by 180 degrees phase-cancel, creating distinctive notches in the sound.

Dial in modulation and phaser settings around 50% for that familiar vintage swoosh, or explore deeper by pushing parameters into sonic territory traditional units can’t reach.

Lush stereo chorus and phaser inspired by the Electro-Harmonix Small Stone EH4800 and Stereo Electric Mistress pedals

The Stone Mistress consists of a Phaser and a Chorus unit in chain, modulated by a single LFO generator.

Controls
Rate: Controls the rate of the LFO signal that modulates the speed at which the notches created by the All-Pass filters sweep back and forth across the spectrum. The same principle is applied to the comb filter created by the delay unit that originates the chorus effect.
Phaser depth: Controls the sweeping range of the All-Pass notches. The more the Depth, the more pronounced the phasing effect.
Chorus depth: Controls the amount of delay time applied by the delay unit. The more you turn the knob clockwise, the more pronounced the chorus effect.
Color: When engaged, feedback is sent back to the Phaser input. Notice how the Stone Mistress carves into the frequency spectrum hollowing out the sound. Fundamentals and harmonics glide in and out for an extremely pronounced phasing/shifting effect.

Add liquid texture to your music

Liquidize is an effect processor designed to make your samples sound watery and fluid! At its core, Liquidize features a unique yet simple processing chain: a self-modulating vocoder, reverb, and phaser. Together, these elements let you shape and dial in the perfect amount of “liquid” character for your sound.

Parameters:

Bands: Sets the number of vocoder bands. More bands offer higher resolution but increase CPU usage
Bandwidth: Controls the Q value (or width) of each vocoder band. Higher values result in narrower bands.

Attack: Determines how quickly the vocoder responds to incoming signals
Release: Sets how long the vocoder takes to return to zero after the signal end

Threshold: Adjusts the level at which each vocoder band is gated

Phaser: Controls the depth of the phasing effect applied to the signal
Size: Sets the perceived space or room size

Verb: Adjusts the reverb wet/dry mix

Mix: Controls the overall wet/dry balance of the entire effect chain

Gain: Applies a volume boost or cut to the processed signal

phasereplicant is a spectral granular synth that splits audio into 256 bands and performs granular synthesis on each band individually! It also lets you change the phase of the audio (setting it to zero, randomizing phase, etc…), keeping the magnitude the same, making the audio sound smeared and blurry while retaining the harmony of the original sound. There is also a live granular section as well, along with drag and drop functionality into the daw host.
